Removal or dismantle of unwanted trees: some trees simply outgrow their location in your garden or grounds. They can be taking up too much space, light or pose a risk to your property. We can remove any size of tree, in any location. If it is not possible to fell the tree in one, we use specialist climbing and rigging techniques to remove your tree in pieces, safely and efficiently.
Crown lift or canopy reduction: wherever possible we aim to use tree removal as a last resort. Dependant on the species of tree in question, we can perform either a crown lift (removing lower branches) or canopy reduction (pruning the entire tree to make it smaller). Crown lifts are often used to open up the space underneath the tree. This can be for a variety of reasons: access, allowing other plants and shrubs to grow, or simply opening up a view. Canopy reductions are normally measured in percentages, we offer anything from a 5% reduction right up to 40% (depending of species). If the tree is still too large and the species allows it, we can perform a pollard which is explained in detail below.
Pollarding: some species of tree respond well to a very hard cut back. Most commonly performed on Willow trees, we prune the tree right back to its major branches, leaving very little foliage behind. The tree will then regenerate from these cuts and regrow but as a smaller, more manageable tree. A re-pollard can then take place as required to allow the process to repeat itself over a number of years.
Deadwooding: this is quite simply the process of removing dead wood from the canopy of the tree. This is often performed for safety reasons as dead wood is more brittle and likely to fall from the tree during high winds etc. It is also beneficial for the health of the tree as it helps it to concentrate its energy into the live branches, and gives them more light and space to grow.
Crown Thinning: this is most commonly undertaken in fruit trees. Thinning the tree is the removal of unnecessary or surplus branches within the canopy to allow others to flourish. The main benefit of this is it allows more light and air through the tree, promoting health. The added advantage of crown thinning is it reduces the ‘sail’ effect of the tree, making it less likely to be damaged or blown over in high winds and storms.
